DASO’s approach employs traditional tribal mediation practices, emphasizing the role of Islamic principles in reducing violence, preventing revenge killings, and promoting peaceful coexistence among different sects and identity groups. The organization conducts training workshops with influential citizen leaders (e.g. religious preachers, counselors, academics, tribal leaders, and members of local government) to promote peace and coexistence in their communities. Some workshops, for example, have brought together Yemeni Salafis, Ismaili and Zaydi Shias, Sufis, and members of the Muslim Brotherhood and Houthi movements to raise awareness of the Islamic basis for peaceful coexistence and social diversity, to equip participants to transmit these values to their communities, and to counter political and extremist manipulation of religion.

DASO trainings have focused on building participants’ knowledge of the causes and realities of conflict in Yemen, raising awareness of Islamic values that promote peace and coexistence, and developing participants’ capacities to mitigate armed conflicts and propagate values of forgiveness, human rights, democracy, and social cohesion in the larger culture. Training modules in DASO workshops have included themes on armed conflict and social violence and the role of tribal and religious ethics and leaders in its promotion or prevention.

DASO has managed several internationally-supported programs. One, conducted in partnership with the Government of Yemen, the US Embassy, and the private sector, trained hundreds of religious, local council, and other community leaders in eight governorates in peace building, collaboration, and countering violent extremism. Another 18-month project on peace and social cohesion, sponsored by the European Union, conducted a field study on issues of conflict in Abyan, Al-Jawf, and Lahj, awareness-raising workshops to disseminate the findings of the study, and community initiatives to promote dialogue and reconciliation.

DASO has also facilitated initiatives to increase peaceful electoral participation, especially among women.  Most recently, DASO launched a program to engage civil society activists, particularly women and youth leaders, in advocating and supporting the outcomes of Yemen’s National Dialogue Conference (NDC) in their communities and connecting the concerns and priorities of these communities to the NDC and the government.

Dar Al-Salaam Organization has done wonderful work in peacebuilding throughout Yemen.  They have a large indigenous network of religious, tribal, and other leaders throughout the country  and can gain access to difficult areas that others often cannot in support of their peace work.  They are deeply, sincerely committed to countering violence and peacefully resolving conflict, and they bring a unique set of skills in religious peacemaking and tribal mediation to this task.  I support them wholeheartedly as a most worthy candidate for this award.

Rebecca Cataldi

I wish to add my support with the Dar Al Salaam organization from Yemen. They are doing great job inside their country and for Yemenite society. I wish their activities, changing the people there to a peaceful nation, will have the impact they really deserve and be an example to other peace organizations all around the world. Good luch my friends, long live free peaceful Yemen.

Dar Al-Salaam Organization was established about 14 years ago, I can say DASO “House of Peace” is newly established with personally offers, it was small and local organization since that time but right now I can DASO became International Organization with their great achievements and goals. Staff members they have sacrificed and work day and night since the born of the organization, but still they have long journey and miles to bring peace in our community, DASO have several goals and tasks. Here are some of the activities and tasks that conducted by their professional members

  • Conducted meetings with the community leaders strengthening peace and stability.
  • Participated in several activities regarding to peacebuilding in the conflicted areas.
  • Orientated the community about the bad effect of conflict and revenge in Yemen society.
  • Communicated well with the community leaders and people in charge to maintain peace and stability in different areas in Yemen.
  • Regular arrange training courses about the human rights, and relevant training.
  • Maintained close working relationships with the householder and other organization reducing the conflicts and the making peace.
  • Investigated several cause of early marriage in Yemen, and assist the guide the victims.
  • Provided assistance and guidance for the marginalized people in Yemen.
  • Attended and participated with international community and share experience and ideas to solve internal conflict among the community and maintain peace and stability.

Dar Al-Salaam Organization is a very strong peace building organization and it works inside a threat prone zone is a great achievement in itself. It has not only survived the violent conditions but have been successful in creating Peace in these conflict areas. This organization has made pioneer contributions in promoting peace through dialogues and meetings with all leaders and people of different communities in Yemen. It is the ray of Hope and light for the innocent people who are at the radar of gunpoint and violence all the time and in such conditions restoring peace is a mind blowing achievement and my heart felt salutation to this Organization.

The most touching part of this organization is bringing out the Principles of Islam to the World that Islam teaches Virtues of Peace and not violence, Islam believes in Peace, love and Friendship and wants People to live in harmony and brotherhood. Creating such awareness on Islam is important and the need of the hour as in the name of Religion - many young minds are trained and taught to become suicide bombers, sleeper cells and terrorists and any religion in the World does not teach violence and create violence but always promotes peace and unity among people.  Such a Peace building Work by this organization will go a long way in wiping wrong thoughts and notions on Religion that had been root cause of many violent activities in the World. I would strongly recommend this organization for this Award as it is not only deserving but a very worthy nomination.
